Hello Martin, following my site visit this morning, I confirm the
recommendations given as follows..
Extension to lounge - The footings had been taken down to the underside of
the raft foundation to the main house. At this level a compact silty sand
exists. The sides of the trench did show fragments of brick, concrete and
tile, however at the base these could not be detected, and due to the very
compact nature of the soils, a footing is appropriate as the ground bearing
pressure beneath at footing to the single storey extension will be very
similar to the underside of the raft to the two storey parts, thus a level
of consistency will be achieved.
My disturbance of the trench base surface needs to be cleaned out and the
sides squared up to increase the width by approximately 50mm each side,
concrete may then be poured.
Porch extension - a number of drains exist in the trenches. Where the drain
runs parallel to the trench, this should be increased in width to provide at
least 200mm concrete to each side of the protected drain. Drain to be
protected using 50mm Kingspan or similar.
The above recommendations will minimise the chance of differential
settlement and any initial consolidation that might occur will not be of a
serious structural nature.
Kind regards
Neil
