Stuart
If you were to take the trees out and allow the ground to recover for a season, that would solve your problem and minimize the dig required
Regards
Paul

Hi Paul
I know Andy has discussed with you, so I'm not wanting to step on anyone's toes, but thought it worth mentioning that the trees in question are Leylandii which have been planted as hedging and have grown 4.0-5.0 metres high. The roots are small and relatively shallow.
Any number of these Leylandii can be removed if it helps the situation.
Can you advise?
Best Regards
Stuart Reasbeck

The ground may be good but that’s not the issue, it’s the proximity of the trees which means you have to dig to a greater depth to minimize the potential for future movement due to the trees

There are other options as we discussed deep foundations 2.5-3.0m strip footings with a compressible material on the inside or a piles with a reinforced ground beam are your other options both of which require a suspended floor with a void below.
As you know, James Bourke and myself have discussed that the raft is the best structurally & most probably the best cost effective solution in this case, as in the case of deep foundations there is a large concrete volume and the piled solution will need a specialist piling company to design & install the piles then there is the reinforced beams to install and you would still have to construct a suspended floor in both cases
